Coming up next, we will spend five weeks in the book of Deuteronomy.

To set the stage for this book: the Israelites have now wandered in the desert for 40 years. An entire generation has passed away in the desert with the exception of Caleb, Joshua, and Moses. The laws and commands that God gave the Israelites (in Leviticus) Moses is now retelling to the next generation that is about to enter the Promised Land. He is reminding Israel who God is, what God has done, what His laws and commands are, and how they should live as the holy and chosen people of God.

Although this was written to the nation of Israel, so much can be applied to our own lives. Our prayer time in Deuteronomy will focus on two main themes: (1) who God is and (2) how we, His people, should live.

The God of Israel is the same God we serve today:
-He is Merciful.
-He is a Jealous God.
-He is the faithful, covenant-keeping God.
-He fights for us.
-He carries us like a father carries a son.
-He is our shield, our helper, and our glorious sword.
-There is NO God but Him.

So as we pray to know Him, let the response of our lives and our prayer be to:
-Be careful to follow His commands and do what His Word says.
-Fear the Lord.
-Walk in His ways.
-Love the Lord with our heart, soul, mind, and strength.
-Hold fast to the Lord.
-Never forget the Lord.

Deuteronomy 4:7 says, “What nation is so great to have their gods near them the way the Lord God is near us when we pray to Him?”

Just as God was near the Israelites when they prayed, He is also near us when we pray. So, let’s draw near to Him in prayer! Join us in praying through the book of Deuteronomy, and invite someone to pray with you!
