Introduction to Job

Coming up next, we will spend seven days in the book of Job. Job was a man who was blameless and upright, feared God, and shunned evil (Job 1:1). And yet, God, in His sovereignty, allowed Satan to wreak havoc on Job’s life through extreme trials of loss, death, and physical suffering. Throughout his personal suffering and the scolding of his three friends, Job still maintained his integrity. He refused to curse God and resolved to accept both the good and the trouble that God gave (2:10). Though God is silent for 38 grueling chapters out of 42, we see that God was as equally present, engaged, and sovereign in the midst of Job’s trials as He was when He beautifully restored Job’s life and gave him twice as much as he had previous enjoyed.

The book of Job not only gives us a glimpse at the sovereignty of God through Job’s suffering, but also many deep truths about the vastness and power of God:

-His wisdom is profound.
-He shakes the earth and makes its pillars tremble.
-He stretches out the heavens and treads on the waves of the sea.
-He performs wonders that cannot be fathomed.
-His miracles cannot be counted.
-He does great things beyond our understanding.
-Everything under heaven belongs to Him.
-He can do all things. No plan of His can be thwarted.

God Himself said of Job, “There is no one on earth who is like him.” Clearly, Job was a man of deep integrity in God’s sight. After all his suffering, upon hearing the voice of God, Job’s only response was to see His own unworthiness (40:4), despise himself, and repent in dust and ashes (42:6). If this was Job’s response, how much more should we respond in humility and repentance when faced with the wonder, power, and sovereignty of our God, no matter what kinds of suffering we face?
